An infrastructure-oriented thinktank said that Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte can bring issues of the urban poor and other marginalized sectors to the Senate if she decides to run for higher office next year.

“If Mayor Sara decides to run for the Senate next year, she will not only have executive experience in the legislature, but her track record of showing concern for the poor speaks for itself, such as when she stopped demolition proceedings in Davao City until adequate relocation for informal settlers was assured.”
This was the statement of Terry Ridon, Infrawatch PH convenor and former urban poor chief of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Standing on her own merits
“The surveys showing Mayor Duterte as among the leading senatorial bets show that the Davao city mayor can stand on her own merits, as other senate aspirants linked to President Rodrigo Duterte have not fared as well.”
Mayor Duterte has consistently been in the top five in all recent surveys for the 2019 senatorial elections.
“The public always remembers how Mayor Sara confronted Sheriff Abe Andres in 2011 over the demolition of shanties in Davao’s Agdao district. It is a testament of leadership borne out of a concern for the poor.”
Moros and Lumads
Ridon, a former lawmaker, said that Mayor Duterte’s experience as chief executive of Davao City can provide the Senate a fresh perspective on developing legislation benefiting Moros and Lumads.
“With the enactment of the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL), it is indispensable to have new legislators who fully understand the historical injustice that our Moro people continue to experience.”
Ridon also hopes that Mayor Duterte can facilitate continuing dialogue in Lumad and other indigenous communities to address the roots of poverty in their area.
“The status of Davao City as a melting pot of culture provides Mayor Sara first-hand knowledge on how to address problems and provide real solutions to marginalized sectors.”
